Norton Gets $17.5 Million in Earmarks for D.C. Priorities July 28, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released earmarks of $17.5 million for the District of Columbia, all in the final House appropriations bills and likely to remain through Senate passage. Norton, who always releases her earmarks, said "Democrats have done a good job of eliminating pay-to-play earmarks but fortunately recognize that some short-term amounts, demonstrably in the public interest, for public entities and non-profits, with a strong track record, are appropriate." Norton, who without a vote cannot be on the Appropriations Committee, has to make a strong effort to get extra funds for her district and reserves these opportunities for reputable organizations that serve the city's poorest or most vulnerable residents and for organizations with a public interest mission, such as health, environmental restoration and culture. Among those for whom Norton obtained funds this year were organizations that serve the city's youth, including $450,000 to Youth Power Center for Mentoring, located in Ward 8; $350,000 to Living Classrooms for youth workforce development; $200,000 for School Biz a match for educational programs; and $150,000 for the National Building Museum for educational programs. Norton continued championing cleanup of the Potomac, Anacostia and Chesapeake Bay with $7.5 million for clean-up, construction and studies. She got $5 million for Children's Hospital for state-of-the-art technology to detect and study brain tumors, autism, cancers, neurological abnormalities and congenital diseases. She also got$100,000 for the Whitman Walker Clinic and $50,000 to improve the trauma center at Washington Hospital Center. In addition, for the Veterans Hospital here, Congresswoman Norton got nearly $43 million for construction, including: $635,000 for the expansion of the VA Research Building, $9,668,000 for the renovation of the 4C Patient Ward and expansion, and $6,900,000 to expand the project of a four story modular building.
